NU Wiebolt Hall Phase II

Baumann Consulting provided fundamental and enhanced commissioning and IR thermography for the phase II renovation of Northwestern University’s Wieboldt Hall.

Originally built in 1926 as Northwestern University’s School of Commerce, Wieboldt Hall is now home to the Schools of Professional and Continuing Studies. Located on the University’s Streeterville campus, the sixth, seventh, and eighth floors of the building were renovated.

The building houses the School of Professional Studies (SPS), Schaffner Library, and portions of the Kellogg School of Management and the School of Continuing Studies (SCS) including classrooms, offices, and various support spaces.

Baumann Consulting provided fundamental and enhanced commissioning services for phase II of the renovation project.  Besides traditional onsite testing, the team visualized and analyzed large amounts of trend data from the building automation system through Baumann’s unique Operation Diagnostics methodology for monitoring-based Commissioning (see below).

The renovation included the conversion on the seventh floor to classroom use and administrative office spaces on the sixth and eighth floors. Seventh floor modifications include upgraded classroom technology and electrical systems in support of SCS’s growth, particularly its distance learning initiative. Renovations on the sixth and eighth floors include the upgrade of the MEP, fire protection, fire alarm, and tele-data communication systems to bring those systems up to code and providing office space for staff displaced by classroom conversions on the seventh floor.

Besides the fundamental and enhanced commissioning, which fulfills the LEED v3 CI requirements, Baumann Consulting also provided IR Thermography services for the building enclosure of the renovated floors to ensure that the envelope was constructed to be thermally sound and up to code.
