Located in the heart of Zurich, Bahnhofstr. is a popular shopping destination that attracts locals and tourists alike. Bahnhofstr. 3, known as Switzerland’s first stock exchange, is a newly converted commercial building in downtown Zurich that consists of office and retail areas.
Bahnhofstr. 3 will be one of the first properties to be integrated into the CoolCity network. It will supply properties around the lake with energy for heating and cooling from the lake water and reduce environmental impact.
During the winter season, heat is extracted from the water as an energy source to raise the temperature of the carrier medium. During the summer months, lake water is directly used for cooling in buildings.
Baumann conducted energy modeling in compliance with LEED v4 Core and Shell. The figure below illustrates the energy savings per end-use type, highlighting the benefits of the lake water use particularly for heating.
The project has achieved a 46.4% reduction compared to ASHRAE 90.1-2010 and earned 17 out of 18 points.
