Alexander House

Baumann Consulting provided energy benchmarking services and an ASHRAE Level II Energy Audit for this multi-family residential condominium within the metro area of Washington D.C.

Located in the heart of Silver Spring, Maryland, Alexander House provides residents with prime amenities in a central location. This vast apartment community is situated just one block from the Silver Spring Metro and only minutes from downtown Washington, D.C.

In 2014, Alexander House management was interested in identifying energy efficiency opportunities and a physical needs assessment to plan a renovation for 2015. The design team was in the stage of defining the scope for the renovation when Baumann Consulting joined the team and provided an energy audit.

Baumann was able to help the client understand the baseline of their current energy and water consumption and identify potential system upgrades and savings to improve overall building performance. Baumann’s recommendations included:

  • Low-cost upgrades including faucet aerators and pipe insulation
  • Upgrading the lighting system
  • Installing variable frequency drives
  • Insulating sections of the exterior walls
  • Replacing exhaust fans

By providing costs and energy savings estimates of each recommendation, the building owner was able to weigh capital improvement budgets with reductions in energy and maintenance costs.
