Energy Modeling, System Optimization
Originally built in 1898, the Duke Ellington School of the Arts has expanded over time to accommodate the growing needs of the school. In 2014, the school embarked upon a renovation campaign to update the building to a 21st century world-class arts facility while respecting the historic integrity of the existing building.
Baumann was selected to provide whole-building energy modeling services for the renovation and expansion of this historic school. The expansion resulted in a total building square footage of approximately 258,000 ft2, including multiple performance venues: a 850-seat state of the art, multi-disciplinary theater, a 300-seat intimate recital performance hall, and a 150-seat black box theater.
Baumann provided energy modeling services to contribute towards the LEED certification, considering the following unique features of the project, which impacted the sizing of the mechanical systems and building performance:
- Photovoltaic glass on the skylights and
- Dynamic glass on the south façade
In conjunction with solar chimneys, underground ventilation labyrinths, geothermal and VRV systems, and energy recovery systems the building achieved 30% energy cost savings over the ASHRAE 90.1-2007 baseline.
