As one of our first employees Torsten Biernat joined Baumann Consulting 15 years ago as a Green Building Consultant for the Washington, DC office. Today, he is a Senior Vice President and the Director of Baumann’s Sustainability practice area.
Torsten has been instrumental in establishing and growing Baumann’s green building and sustainability services from their infancy to a team of almost 15 sustainability consultants. Under his leadership, Baumann grew its footprint in Germany, successfully establishing the sustainability practice area in the US, and is now a recognized sustainability consulting firm.
Torsten has a real talent when it comes to working with people and it is especially visible when communicating and working with clients. He has brought in some of the biggest opportunities and clients for Baumann.
Torsten has continuously expanded Baumann’s service offerings. His team covers a wide range of green building certification systems – from LEED, BREEAM, and DGNB to WELL, Fitwel, Green Globes, Wired Score, and QNG. In addition, the Baumann team provides all services, besides energy modeling and commissioning, needed for a successful certification. Those services include life cycle analysis (LCA), Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Measurements, and the development of policies.
Torsten has successfully managed over 500 green building certification projects in the US and throughout Europe. This vast experience coupled with his deep understanding of technical aspects of buildings allows him to “translate” the requirements from certification systems, making them digestible for owners, designers, and contractors, and advise clients on how to best integrate them.
Combined with his reliability and “client comes first” principle, Torsten is valued as a trusted advisor and has fostered strong relationships with clients. In return, they entrust him with challenging and unique projects in the US (including Hawaii), Germany, Mexico, Switzerland, Chile, Russia, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey.
When I started with Baumann 15 years ago, we had about 5-6 employees. I am proud that I was part of making this company what it is today with three locations and almost 60 employees. At the same time our service offering has expanded as well and is still growing.
Torsten has leveraged his international experience and insight into the latest sustainability concepts, to guide junior employees, becoming a vital mentor in the process. As one of the firm’s longest-tenured employees, he stands as a key figure within the organization. His dedication is mirrored in his passion for running, with a remarkable marathon personal best of under three hours.
