Baumann Consulting Provides Evaluation, M&V Services in the Nation’s Capital

Washington, D.C., July 2014.

The District of Columbia has the ambition to become “the greenest, healthiest and most livable city in the nation”. By 2032, it aims to cut citywide energy use by 50%, and increase use of renewable energy to make up 50% of its total energy supply.

Since 2012, Baumann Consulting is helping the District to remain on track for achieving its goals by providing independent third-party evaluation services for the energy efficiency and renewable energy initiatives provided by the DC Sustainability Energy Utility (SEU).

“We are thrilled to help measure the effectiveness of the DC SEU program,” says Kindra Lam, Project Consultant. “The District of Columbia’s sustainability policies are a shining example of how a city can reduce costs for its citizens and businesses, immediately improve the local economy, and pave the way for a better future.”

The DC SEU helps District residents, businesses, and institutions save energy and money through energy efficiency and renewable energy programs. Led by the Sustainable Energy Partnership and under contract to the District Department of the Environment, the DC SEU is committed to environmental preservation, community engagement, and economic development.

Under contract to Tetra Tech, the lead evaluation firm, Baumann Consulting serves as the go-to boots-on-the-ground team responsible for coordinating and conducting onsite project evaluation efforts. For each of the 71 site visits completed in 2014, Baumann Consulting staff members traveled to the site, conducted interviews, inventoried and verified the installed technologies, and documented findings.

Through our evaluation efforts, Baumann Consulting interviewed a wide array of DC citizens and business owners. The dialogue provided Baumann Consulting an experiential understanding of how Washingtonians use, think about, and save energy, and provided homeowners and businesses an opportunity to learn about energy efficiency. In addition to the accounting and educational benefits, this practice provides transparency to the public.

Baumann Consulting looks forward to building upon its EM&V experience by continuing to analyze, monitor and verify the energy efficiency policies that continue to sweep across the country, improving the bottom line of both residents and businesses.

Baumann Staff Volunteer at Chicago Architecture Foundation’s Engeneer Fest

This past month Baumann’s Meredith Marsh, Green Building Consultant, and Maher Maymoun, Energy Engineer, volunteered at the Chicago Architecture Foundation’s annual Engineering Fest. Each year this event brings together hundreds of families for two days of fun, free hands-on activities that celebrate the creativity and ingenuity in the world around us and teach kids ages 3-12 why design matters. Volunteers are stationed at one of six stations covering various disciplines of engineering: civil, environmental, structural, mechanical, electrical and acoustic. Maher helped kids of all ages create their own wind turbines, and Meredith helped attendees as they tried to see who could build the tallest towers from building blocks. We were thrilled to meet the families that came out for this great event and look forward to participating again next year!

Oliver Baumann, President of Baumann Consulting, recently profiled in German newspaper

Chicago, IL, June 2014.

Oliver Baumann, President of Baumann Consulting, was recently profiled in a great in-depth article that appeared in the German newspapers “Schwaebische Zeitung”,“Rheinische Post” and “Badische Neue Nachrichten.”

OliverBaumannPaperFeature

The story details Oliver’s German roots growing up in the city of Biberach in southwest Germany and the early years of his engineering career when he became involved in a variety of international projects and developed a passion for pushing the envelope of high performance in buildings. Venturing out to found his own office in the U.S. in 2006, Oliver grew the company from a few German engineers in a basement office in Washington, D.C. to an international, multidisciplinary team of architects, engineers and green building experts. Baumann’s team consults with clients ranging from building owners to community stakeholders to enhance the performance and efficiency of the built environment with the ultimate goal of elevating high performance buildings from a niche segment of the market to the industry standard.

For those of you with more knowledge of the German language who would like to take a closer look at the full story, the article (in German!) can be found at the following link: here.

Amir Rezaei-Bazkiaei Earns Ph.D. from the University at Buffalo

Chicago IL, June 2014.

Baumann is pleased to announce that Building Performance Analyst Amir Rezaei-Bazkiaei earned his Ph.D. in Environmental and Water Resources Engineering at the University at Buffalo this past May.

Amir’s PhD research focused on the integration of post-consumer waste from the tire industry, tire derived aggregate (TDA), with horizontal ground source heat pumps (GSHPs). His numerical and experimental research confirmed, for the first time, the benefits of utilizing TDA material to form a non-homogeneous soil profile resulting in increased energy extraction/dissipation from/to the ground pipes of a horizontal GSHP. Amir’s innovative research is an excellent example of pioneering methods for repurposing problematic waste stream products into value-added materials to enhance the efficiency of renewable energy systems.

Amir began his graduate studies at the University at Buffalo in January of 2009, where he served as the primary research assistant at the Center for Integrated Waste Management (CIWM) in the department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering. Amir initially joined Baumann as a building performance analyst during an internship in 2012, and recently rejoined the team as a Building Performance Analyst in June of 2014. Baumann congratulates Amir on his tremendous accomplishment and is proud to have his diverse experience on the team.
